After Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. voiced their opinions on President Trump and his actions as the leader of the country. As a result of that, they have hired personal security guards to protect them. Although the stats show that the threats towards them are low profile, the women want to be one hundred percent that they will be safe and protected.

There are concerns though that this help for this group of women will bring attention and create opportunities for others to speak out and request protection as well.

According to Fox News, in the fiscal year of 2018, USCP Chief Steven Sund stated that “the USCP dealt with 4,894 threats against lawmakers. USCP is now at 2,502 for this year. Sund argued that at this rate, the number of threats will “break last year’s” mark.”

As a result of all of this, the Capitol security officials are also now looking at different ideas to enhance security in the field for lawmakers who feel they are at risk. As times change and politics get increasingly more coverage in the news, it would be no shock for threats like this to continue and the need for security to also increase.
